BRIN intensifies biodiversity rescue action

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) intensifies action to rescue Indonesian biodiversity from the risk of climate changes and land degradation."Climate change and land degradation became one of the causes behind the increasing loss of biodiversity," Head of BRIN Laksana Tri Handoko stated during the Biodiversity Week in Cibinong, West Java, Monday. ccording to data from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in 2018, the threat to biodiversity at the global level reached an average of 25 percent. This condition indicates that around one million species face extinction in several decades, and 47 percent of the ecosystem has experienced a decline. This is a global crisis that should be handled immediately through biodiversity rescue effort and conservation action, Handoko stated. Biodiversity currently faces serious threats, such as climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and exploitation of natural resources, he pointed out. Handoko ensured that the BRIN will continue to stick to its commitment to adopting the sustainability practice, promoting conservation, and raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity through various researches. However, the implementation of Indonesia's commitment toward the global biodiversity management agreement within the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) encounters problems and challenges. Institutional capacity, regulatory aspects, implementation of programs at the grassroots level, coordination between stakeholders, and various other issues pose challenges in the implementation of the GBF agreement in Indonesia. Hence, on account of this, the BRIN will intensify the spread and exchange of latest information on biodiversity rescue actions that have been conducted at the national and local level. In addition, the role of technology is necessary to optimize the efforts to utilize resources sustainably. During the event, BRIN's Research and Innovation Facilitation Deputy Agus Haryono also highlighted that the agency has various research and innovation funding programs.
