32nd SEA Games: Cambodia’s Performance in Triathlon and Vovinam Beyond Expectation

Triathlon and Vovinam events of the 32nd SEA Games hosted by Cambodia ended successfully with unexpected results for Cambodia.

The host country earned two gold and one silver medals in Triathlon competitions taking place from May 7 to 9 at Kep province, with the participation of athletes from Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia.

The two gold medals were grabbed by Ms. Margot Morokot Garabedian in the event of 750-metre swimming, 20-kilometre cycling, 5-kilometre running; and in Women’s Individual Aquathlon, while the silver one was won by Mr. Sokha Mickael Chaumond in Men’s Duathlon (5-kilometre running, 20-kiolometre cycling and 2.5-kilometre running) event.

The result goes beyond expectation as the gold medal index set by the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) is only one, according to Mr. Ngin Sokpanha, Secretary General of Cambodia Triathlon Federation.

Cambodia is proud not only of the result, but also of the smooth organisation and warm hospitality, said the secretary general.

For Vovinam, Cambodia topped the medal list, obtaining a total of 27 medals – 10 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze, followed by Vietnam with 20 medals (7 gold, 12 silver, and 1 bronze), and Thailand with 16 medals (5 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze).

It was unexpected that Cambodia clinched up to 10 gold medals in Vovinam as its gold medal index set by CAMSOC was only nine.

Taking place from May 6 to 9 at the Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Vovinam event attracted the participation of seven countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Cambodia was appreciated by Southeast Asian and international countries for being the host of the 32nd SEA Games from May 5 to 17 under the motto "Sports: Living in Peace".

The host country had provided free entry for the spectators to all tournaments, free accommodation and food for sport delegates, and free broadcasting rights for media partners. This reaffirms the Kingdom's commitment to hosting the regional sports family and international guests in a neighbouring environment of solidarity and friendship.

SEA Games 2023 is welcoming over 12,400 athletes, coaches, and staff from participating ten ASEAN member countries and Timor-Leste.
