BEIJING, November 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — New weekly data released by iResearch shows that Youku App, a mobile video application developed by China’s leading Internet television company, Youku Tudou Inc., was the second most popular mobile app behind WeChat in terms of time users spent on the mobile platform. Collectively, Youku App users spent more than 3.32 billion hours, the equivalent of 380,000 years, on the video application in the third quarter of 2014, according to iResearch. As mobile video has begun to engage users for similar or even longer periods of time compared to the most popular mobile messaging apps, video viewing has become as indispensable in the mobile Internet era as communication.

Youku attributes the advance of its app to the diversification of its content, which is driving more traffic to Youku’s multi-screen eco-system. The second season of the original web series Surprise has just concluded, setting records for both an average of more than 40 million views per episode and for accumulated total video views exceeding 650 million. Another top original outdoor reality show On the Road, garnered 340 million video views with its second season, and top syndicated content like the ancient Chinese fantasy Gu Jian Qi Tan (Legend of the Ancient Sword) has received 1.9 billion views to date.

iResearch’s data also reveals that Youku App has widened its #1 lead over the #2 mobile video app to currently having 1.8 times the amount of time spent as its closest rival and growing from 1.6 times in the five weeks spanning over September and the first part of October. Total weekly time spent on the Youku app is more than the sum of the 2nd and 3rd ranked video apps in the week dated September 29th through October 5th.

On a separate note, iResearch’s data tracking on user behavior across screens – iMediaMatrix, shows that in August, Youku’s number of user visits across multiple screens has exceeded 10 billion. Youku is the first in the online video sector to reach this milestone.
