Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Effectiveness of Police CCTV Cameras in Preventing Crime

Question

Mr Alex Yam asked the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs (a) how effective have the police CCTV cameras been in preventing or solving crime; and (b) when will the installation of PolCams in Yew Tee be completed.

Written Reply by Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs:

As a key component of the Community Policing System (COPS), Police Cameras will be installed at all HDB blocks and multi-storey car parks (MSCPs). Since May 2012, a total of around 18,000 Police Cameras have been installed in 3,300 HDB blocks and MSCPs across all 16 Town Councils and the 87 wards that they cover. We are at the one-third mark and installation at the remaining HDB blocks and MSCPs, including those in Yew Tee, is on track for completion by 2016.

In the last two years, Police has used video footage retrieved from Police Cameras to solve more than 200 cases. Investigative leads have been obtained in more than 450 cases.

I would like to thank Members for your support in the Police Camera programme. Residents have also welcomed the installation of police cameras and reported an improved sense of safety and security. We will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the Police Camera programme as more cameras are installed.
