Working Visit by Republic of Korea Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong to Singapore, 24 June 2021

Republic of Korea (ROK) Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong, who is in Singapore for a working visit, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and met Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan today. This is Minister Chung’s first visit to Singapore in his capacity as Foreign Minister.

Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Chung had a fruitful discussion on bilateral relations. Both Ministers discussed ways of expanding and deepening Singapore-ROK cooperation, including in new and emerging areas such as FinTech and the digital economy, as our countries work towards COVID-19 recovery. Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Chung also agreed on the importance of restoring air connectivity between our countries in a gradual and safe way. Minister Balakrishnan reaffirmed longstanding ASEAN-ROK ties and looked forward to the ROK’s continued efforts to broaden its cooperation with the region. The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Prime Minister Lee and Minister Chung reaffirmed the warm and close friendship between Singapore and the ROK. They welcomed further bilateral exchanges to strengthen cooperation in confronting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prime Minister Lee welcomed the ROK’s interest to strengthen its engagement of ASEAN. They also had a broad discussion on regional and international developments.
