Singapore (dpa) – Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam announced the
dissolution of parliament on Tuesday, but did not announce the date
of the new general election.
All seats in the 99-member parliament will be up for election. About
2.5 million Singaporeans will be eligible to vote.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Sunday that he would call soon
for a new mandate for his People’s Action Party.
Nine other political parties are expected to enter the fray. Issues
such as immigration and transportation are expected to garner
attention from voters.
A breakdown in two of the country’s main train lines last July
sparked anger over system maintenance.
Lui Tuck Yew, the current transport minister, has already indicated
that he will not stand for re-election.
