It is time for the voices and interests of developing countries to be truly regarded by the international community.
Jakarta Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in the company of First Lady Iriana, departed for Hiroshima, Japan, from the Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase, Jakarta, on Friday, to attend the 49th G7 Summit.The president stated here on Friday that he was attending the summit on the invitation of Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida, who is serving as president of the G7.
The summit will take place on Saturday (May 20), Jokowi noted.
He stated that G7 member countries -- Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States -- as well as their partner countries will attend the meeting to discuss climate change, food, energy, and other issues.
He emphasized that Indonesia will continue to raise the interests of developing countries as well as to promote collaborations and partnerships among developing and developed countries.
"It is time for the voices and interests of developing countries to be truly regarded by the international community," the president remarked.
Jokowi stated that he would also hold bilateral meetings with several countries, such as Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
In addition, he would attend a business forum to meet with several large Japanese business players.
Jokowi assessed that Japan was an important economic partner for Indonesia since the country is Indonesia's second-largest trading partner as well as the fourth-largest foreign investment source.
"God willing, I will return to Jakarta on May 21," he remarked.
The president also said that he would raise discussions on peace as well as the results of the 42nd ASEAN Summit -- held in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, on May 9-11, 2023 -- at the G7 Summit.
"It (peace issues) will be discussed since the host is Hiroshima, the symbol of peace," the president remarked.
Meanwhile, one of the ASEAN issues that would be brought up at the G7 Summit was the development of the conflict in Myanmar, he stated.
