Cambodia’s Homegrown Srayong Durian Thriving in the Local Market

Preah Vihear: With its distinct taste, high quality, and reasonable price, Srayong durian, grown in Kulen district of Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province, has secured a strong foothold in the local market. Srayong durian farmer Mr. You Chamroeun finds the durian business highly lucrative, thanks to strong domestic demand, and has no concerns about finding buyers for his harvest of the 200 durian trees flourishing across his two-hectare farm.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Cambodian people are increasingly prioritising their health and supporting local products, increasing the preference for home-grown durian as well, even if the price is slightly higher than imported varieties, he said. Mr. You Chamroeun invites durian enthusiasts to visit Srayong village and commune in Kulen district to taste the durian and experience firsthand the organic and sustainable methods used to cultivate the fruit.

Durian lover and loyal customer Mr. Po Soeun, a resident of neighbouring Siem Reap province, attested to the fruit’s exceptional quality. It is creamy and delicious, and more importantly, it is safe to eat, he commended the Srayong durian that costs about 20,000 Riel [US$5] per kilogramme.

Local farmers in the community report that with proper cultivation techniques and favourable yields, they can earn between US$10,000 and US$20,000 per season for each hectare of durian trees they maintain.
