KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Two national women's singles shuttlers displayed excellent performance as they came through two preliminary group stage matches of the 2016 Badminton Asia Championship in Wuhan, China, with ease today.
World junior champion Goh Jin Wei, who was drawn in Group B, beat Chen Jiayuan of Singapore, 21-10, 21-6 in the first match, before defeating Sri Lanka's Lekha Shehani 21-11, 21-16 to advance to the main draw.
The 16-year-old will face Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the first round tomorrow.
Fellow national shuttler Ho Yen Mei also did well by beating Kazakhstan's Veronika Sorokina 21-9 and 21-13, before getting past Cheung Ying Mei from Hong Kong 21-17, 21-12 in Group C, to book a slot in the main draw.
However, 19-year-old Yen Mei, may face an uphill battle after being drawn against world number one Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.
In the mixed doubles category, national duo Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying were shown the exit after losing to South Korean pair Shin Baek Cheol/Chae Yoo Jung in the first round.
The pair were downed 18-21 in the first set, rallied in the second set 21-18, but failed to get through the rubber set with a 16-21 defeat.
However, the disappointment was somewhat offset as the other mixed doubles pair of Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing ousted Japanese duo Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara 21-14, 21-15.
A tough battle also awaits Kian Meng/Pei Jing in the next round as they were drawn to face the Chinese top seed pairing of Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei who received a 'bye'.
Players who will begin their challenge in the first round tomorrow are men's singles player Datuk Lee Chong Wei (third seed) who will face the hosts' Wang Zhengming, followed by Iskandar Zulkarnain who will meet Taiwan's Tzu Wei Wang, while Zulfadli Zulkiffli will play against Wei Nan of Hong Kong.
Men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong are scheduled to meet Singapore's Terry Hee Yong Kai/Loh Kean Hean while Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong will play Liao Min Chun/Tseng Min Hao of Taiwan.
In the women's doubles event, national pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei will play Chinese duo Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang in the first round match tomorrow.
