HSINCHU, October 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Alpha Networks Inc. (TAIEX:3380), a global leader in the networking ODM/OEM industry, today proudly announced the contribution of the high-speed, Top-of-Rack (ToR), bare metal, SNQ-60×0-320F series Data Center switch to the Open Compute Project (OCP) community in July, 2014. The SNQ-60×0-320F series switch utilizes Intel’s quad-core and Freescale® Semiconductor’s dual-core QorIQ® P2020 processor to seamlessly interoperate with Broadcom’s StrataXGS® Trident II switch chip. This switch features an incredible high-density design of 32 40Gbps QSPF+ ports, to provide a massive 1,280 Gbps switching capacity in a 1U form factor.
Alpha Networks’ contribution comprises of two switches from the SNQ-60×0-320F series, the SNQ-6070-320F with a Freescale P2020 CPU module and the SNQ-60A0-320F with an Intel™ Atom® C2558 CPU module. The 32 40Gbps QSPF+ ports on these two high port density switches can be expanded to support up to 104 10Gbps SFP+ ports in a 1U form factor. The system is based on Broadcom’s StrataXGS® Trident II Ethernet chip, which enables non-blocking connectivity and excellent line rate performance with low latency able to handle up to 1,280 Gbps.
The SNQ-60×0-320F series is optimized to save space, cost, and power; targeted to be used as the Top-of-Rack (ToR) Data Center switch. Its 40Gbps high-density ports are extendable to 104 10Gbps SFP+ ports using split cables for maximum rack utilization and flexibility of bandwidth support. This switch offers hot-swappable fan modules and power supply (AC or DC) options with either back-to-front or front-to-back airflow fans to provide optimum thermal solutions for different data center deployment scenarios. The SNQ-60×0-320F series offer the best solution for cloud service providers and telecommunications firms to save space, cost, power and lower the operating expenditure.
The SNX-60×0-320F series also supports the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE). ONIE is an Open Compute Project open source initiative contributed by Cumulus Networks that defines an open “install environment” for bare metal network switches. ONIE enables a bare metal network switch ecosystem where users have a choice among different network operating systems. This environment allows users and channel partners to install the target network OS as part of data center provisioning, in the fashion that servers are provisioned.
While the world is progressing with a huge variety of cloud computing applications in people’s everyday lives, public cloud workloads increase dramatically. High performance, high efficiency, and cost effective switches have become the priority in cloud service providers and telecommunication firms’ plan.
“We are proud to work with Intel, Freescale and Broadcom to contribute this high bandwidth, efficient and cost-optimized series switches to OCP. The SNQ-60×0-320F series will allow cloud service providers and telecommunication firms to adapt and develop their own software to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds; the speed and stability of traditional switches merged together with the flexibility of modern SDN switches,” said Harrison Chang, President of Alpha Networks.
“The 32-port 40GbE QSFP+ switch’s form factor, based on Broadcom’s StrataXGS Trident II chipset, has quickly become the de-facto industry standard for software-defined, robust, high-performance, Top of Rack switching,” said Rochan Sankar, Director of Product Marketing at Broadcom. “We are pleased to see Alpha Networks contribute their latest designs to the OCP ecosystem and further the breadth of open networking solutions based on our feature-rich switch silicon.”
“Freescale is pleased to contribute its multicore technology to Alpha Networks’ new, highly advanced data center solution,” said Nikolay Guenov, Director of Product Management for Freescale’s Digital Networking business. “Freescale’s P2020 QorIQ processor provides highly efficient processing performance and virtualization support to help meet Open Compute Project (OCP) requirements. Additionally, Freescale offers an extremely robust migration path from its P-Series products to the exceptional performance of its T-Series offerings.”
“With the addition of Alpha Networks contribution, customers now have even greater flexibility when choosing their OCP-based Top of Rack switch. The high throughput, choice in silicon, and compatibility with ONIE make the SNQ-60×0-320F series of switches a networking Swiss army knife for any scale out cloud solution,” said Cole Crawford, Executive Director of Open Compute Project Foundation.
