The Police have arrested 40 men, aged between 16 and 77, for various offences during a five-day multi-agency joint operation in Geylang that ended on 16 January 2020.
The operation was led by Bedok Police Division and involved officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, Central Narcotics Bureau, Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and Singapore Customs.
37 men, aged between 16 and 77, were arrested for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act. Cash amounting to more than $8,800 and gambling paraphernalia were also seized. A 22-year-old man was arrested for being a member of an unlawful society under the Societies Act.
2 men, aged 30 and 53, were arrested for dealing with duty-unpaid cigarettes. A 28-year-old woman is assisting HSA with investigations into offences under the Health Products Act.
During the operation, contraband cigarettes and illegal medicines were seized. The total street value of illegal medicines amounted to about $9,000, while the duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) evaded on the cigarettes amounted to about $2,270 and $160 respectively.
Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Julius Lim said that while the five-day operation reinforced the authorities' tough stance against illegal activities at Geylang, it did not mark the end of the enforcement effort. The Police would continue to take stern action against those who commit crimes. He also expressed his appreciation to all the agencies involved for their strong support and commended the officers for their professionalism and excellent teamwork that led to a successful operation.
