SPM Hun Sen: Success of SEA Games 2023 is Joint Achievement of the Whole Cambodian Nation

The success of the 32nd SEA Games is a joint achievement of the whole Cambodian nation and a part of solidarity and unity among ASEAN member countries.

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, made the remarks while he and his spouse Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen were presiding over the Official Closing Ceremony of SEA Games 2023 held at the Morodok Techo National Stadium this evening.

The Cambodian Premier attributed the fruitful outcomes of SEA Games 2023 to the true meaning of “Sport: Live in Peace”, the motto of the regional games in Cambodia, by appealing his fellow citizens to maintain the current full peace.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen further expressed his satisfaction with the energetic and amazingly successful regional event with all smiles of everyone.

The Cambodian leader also thanked all sports delegates, particularly the ASEAN governments for dispatching their athletes to join the SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia, which reflects the spirit of ASEAN’s solidarity, understanding and integration.

In this regard, the Prime Minister of Cambodia conveyed the successful outcome of the 32nd SEA Games to all stakeholders, including foreign friends.

32nd SEA Games Concluded with Remarkable Record for Cambodia

The 32nd Southeast Asian Games or SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia was officially concluded this evening in a solemn ceremony, and as the host, Cambodia achieved a remarkable record of 282 medals in total, of which 81 are gold, 74 are silver, and 127 are bronze, sitting fourth among 11 participating countries.

This auspicious event took place at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh under the presidency of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and his spouse, Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen, together with more than 60,000 local and international guests.

This morning, on his social media network, Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined that this is the achievement of the whole nation who is striving to build a nation in general and the sports sector in particular.

This is the highest medal record for Cambodia since it rejoined the games in 1999 with no medal at all, he added.

Series of musical and art performances by famous local singers, dancers and artists, especially “The Great Soul of Kun Bokotor” martial arts performance were featured on the occasion to cheer the successful organisation of the regional sports games by Cambodia, along with the parade of athletes and a video highlighting activities of SEA Games athletes.

In his remarks, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his appreciation for all medalists and all the athletes, and thanked all stakeholders for this successful outcome.

After that, there were an Award Ceremony for the Best Athletes of the 32nd SEA Games and Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Flag Lowering Ceremony.

At the end of the programme, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh, President of the Cambodian SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games Organising Committees (CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC), handed over the SEAGF flag to Thailand as the host of 33rd SEA Games 2025, followed by “Cambodian Pride” musical performance and amazing firework display.

After the successful and historical organisation of the 32nd SEA Games, Cambodia will also host from June 3-9, 2023 another regional sport event named the 12th ASEAN Para Games 2023 as more than 2,000 para athletes are due to compete during that period.

Cambodian Athletes Win More Medals in Kun Khmer and Vovinam

Cambodian athletes have achieved good performances in Kun Khmer with 14 gold medals, followed by Vovinam (10) and Kun Bokator (8).

According to the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC), Kun Khmer has a total of 19 gold medals, of which Cambodian athletes won 14; while for Vovinam and Kun Bokator, Cambodian athletes earned 10 and 8 out of the total 30 and 21 gold medals, respectively.

The most unexpected sports that Cambodia can get gold medals during the regional sport event are Cricket, Fin Swimming, Pencak Silat, Basketball, Sepak Takraw, E-Sports, etc.

Cambodia didn’t expect any or have little expectation for gold medal in the above-said sports, but our athletes actually did very well, especially in Sepak Takraw, Cricket and Basketball by grabbing 4, 3 and 1 gold medals among a total of 20, 8 and 4 gold medals, respectively.

In total, Cambodian athletes concluded the games with a total of 282 medals – 81 gold, 74 silver and 127 bronze, standing at the fourth place on the Medal Table, behind Vietnam which tops the list with 355 medals (136 gold, 105 silver and 114 bronze) and Thailand, the next host country, and Indonesia which occupy the second and third places with 312 medals (108 gold, 96 silver and 108 bronze) and 276 medals (87 gold, 80 silver and 109 bronze), respectively.

The Philippines was ranked fifth with 58 gold, 86 silver and 116 bronze medals while Singapore won the sixth place with 51 gold, 42 silver and 64 bronze medals.

Malaysia came in seventh with 34 gold, 45 silver and 97 bronze medals, followed by Myanmar with 21 gold, 25 silver and 68 bronze medals; Laos with 6 gold, 22 silver and 60 bronze medals; Brunei with 2 gold, 1 silver and 6 bronze medals; and Timor-Leste with 8 bronze medals.

The Official Closing Ceremony of the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia will take place at the newly-built Morodok Techo National Stadium this evening with more interesting and amazing spectacle.

32nd SEA Games: Wrestling Sets New Record in Cambodia’s History

Wrestling has won 20 medals, of which 5 gold, 4 silver and 11 bronze at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia from May 5 to 17, 2023.

The number of medals earned set a new record in Cambodia's history, Mr. Casey Barnett, Vice President of the Wrestling Federation of Cambodia (WFC), told reporters following the completion ceremony of Wrestling competition here in Phnom Penh on May 16.

In 2013, Cambodia won only 10 medals – 4 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze – at the SEA Games in Myanmar, continued Mr. Casey Barnett.

Cambodian national wrestlers were working hard in training both in the country and overseas, he added.

Cambodia has expected 3 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games, and as the result, it obtained up to 5, which goes beyond the target, according to Mr. Casey Barnett.

Wrestling is a kind of Olympic sport. This reflects that Cambodia's sports sector is developing and moving to the regional and world levels.

Besides Wrestling, Judo, Athletics, Swimming and E-Sports also earned a new gold medal record in Cambodia's history.

PM Hun Sen Asks Japan to Continue to Help Train Cambodian Judo Athletes

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has sought Japan’s continued assistance to the training of Cambodia Judo athletes.

The Premier made the request while receiving a courtesy call from H.E. Gotaro Ogawa, President of the Cambodian Judo Support Team and former Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh this morning, according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Personal Assistant to Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister thanked H.E. Gotaro Ogawa and Japanese coaches and people for their support and training of Cambodian athletes until they earned medals, which had never been happened before. Anyway, he added, the Cambodian mission does not end with the SEA Games as the Cambodian athletes will participate in many other competitions.

On the other hand, sports bring good health and constitute a bridge between people and people, especially between youth and youth, he said.

For his part, H.E. Gotaro Ogawa expressed his congratulations to Cambodia on the successful hosting of the 32nd SEA Games. He also spoke highly of the Cambodian athletes’ hard-working when they trained in Japan, which was impressed and appreciated by their coaches.

H.E. Gotaro Ogawa stressed that Cambodian athletes are very potential and talented in the field of judo. In this regard, he pledged to continue to help train the Cambodian Judo athletes.

Cambodia To Hold Official Closing Ceremony of SEA Games 2023 This Evening

The 32nd SEA Games, hosted by Cambodia since May 5, 2023, was ended successfully with security and order under the motto of “Sport: Live in Peace”.

The Official Closing Ceremony will take place at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh this evening under the presidency of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and his spouse Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen, with Cambodian high-ranking officials, distinguished national and international guests, civil servants and the general public in attendance.

According to the programme, series of musical and art performances from famous local singers, dancers and artists, especially “The Great Soul of Kun Bokotor” martial arts performance will be held to cheer the successful organisation of the regional sports games by Cambodia, along with the parade of athletes and a video highlighting activities of SEA Games athletes.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen will announce the Official Closing of SEA Games 2023, preceded by remarks from Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defence, and President of the SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games Organising Committees (CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC), and H.E. Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia and Chairman of SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) Council, followed by fabulous firework displays.

On the occasion, there will be Award Ceremony for the Best Athletes of the 32nd SEA Games, SEAGF Flag Lowering Ceremony, and Handover Ceremony of SEAGF Flag to Thailand, the host of the 33rd SEA Games in 2025.

Cambodia’s successful and historic hosting of the SEA Games 2023 came after seven years of preparations for infrastructure development and capacity building of athletes, as well as when the country is enjoying full peace, political and social stability, safety, security, order, economic growth, and development in all domains.

The regional sports event in Cambodia was made possible thanks to the wise leadership of the Royal Government of Cambodia, good management team of CAMSOC, and good collaboration of all stakeholders such as commitment and tireless effort of sports delegates and athletes for fair plays; national and international media; local competent authorities; Cambodian fellow citizens for their wholehearted welcome to foreign guests; youth volunteers with their broad smiles and their friendly, helpful, collaborative and supportive attitudes on hand to sports delegates and spectators; as well as artists and local music companies for their beautiful songs for the SEA Games 2023.

Beyond the national expectation, Cambodia grabbed a total of 282 medals – 81 gold, 74 silver, and 127 bronze, standing fourth on the Medal Table. Of the 81 gold medals, the country won 14 in Kun Khmer, 10 in Vovinam, 8 in Kun Bokator, 6 in Kickboxing, 5 in Wresting, 4 in Chinlone, 3 in Jiu-Jitsu, 3 in E-sports, 3 in Cricket, 2 in Soft Tennis, 2 in Triathlon, 2 in Pencak Silat, 2 in Billiard, 2 in Fin Swimming, 2 in Taekwondo, 2 in Traditional Boat Race, 2 in Arnis, 1 in Ouk Chaktrang (Chess), 1 in Basketball, 1 in Karate, 1 in Wushu, 1 in Badminton, 1 in Athletics, 1 in Judo, 1 in Boxing, and 1 in Jet Ski.

Even after the end of the regional event, Cambodia will continue to warmly welcome all the SEA Games 2023 sports delegates who wish to visit Angkor temples in Siem Reap province by providing them with free entry.

Over 12,400 athletes, coaches, and staff from the ten ASEAN member countries and Timor-Leste participated in the SEA Games 2023.

The regional athletes were set to compete in 37 sports with 581 events: 384 for men, 229 women, and 48 mixed.

In addition to the spirit of sports without discrimination of sex, age, race and religion, the SEA Games 2023 has attracted more and more Cambodian people to love sports, support sports, learn more about sports, and play sports.

International Journalists Praise SEA Games Media Press Centre in Cambodia

Many international journalists covering the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia appreciated the well-organised Main Press Centre (MPC), allowing them to work smoothly and effectively.

One of them, Ms. Devina Ardelia, a journalist from Indonesia was impressed with the fact that the SEA Games MPC in Cambodia provided a comfortable workspace with sufficient internet access, facilitating media work.

Meals have been offered in the MPC, she said, saying thanks to the Royal Government of Cambodia for providing free access to SEA Games.

“Covering news as an international journalist in the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia is a great experience,” she underlined.

Another journalist from Thailand, Mr. Pongpisit Intaranan, shared the same sentiment, saying he was excited to work in the MPC and covered the SEA Games.

“Cambodian people are friendly and give foreigners warm welcome,” the Thai journalist added.

The Main Press Centre (MPC) is located in the compounds of the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh with the capacity to accommodate up to 500 journalists.

Cambodia Mulls Sports Strategic Plan for International Tournaments

Cambodia is preparing a new strategic plan to sustain Cambodia's sports on international arena.

The note was underlined here in Phnom Penh on May 16by H.E. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Coordinating Committee (CAMSOC), following a press conference on the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in 2025.

Cambodia needs to continue to be ready for international sports events including Olympic Games, Asian Games, and SEA Games as well as the Asian Youth Games to be hosted by Cambodia in 2029.

So, the country needs a new strategic plan to sustain Cambodia's sports on international arena, said the secretary general.

Sports sector in Cambodia is developing remarkably and Cambodia grabbed gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games, so the potential needs to be maintained.

He added that Cambodia sports development will focus not only the regional but also the international Olympic levels.
