SEA Games 2023: Cambodia Clinches Nine Medals

As of May 4 evening, Cambodia has earned a total of nine medals, making the Kingdom at the top of the Medal Table for the 32nd SEA Games 2023, said Cambodia 2023.

Of the nine medals, five are gold and four are silver, the source added.

The Philippines came in second with 7 medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze), followed by Indonesia with 6 medals (1 silver and 5 bronze).

Both Lao PDR and Myanmar got four medals. The former earned one gold and three bronze while the latter received one silver and three bronze.

Both Thailand and Vietnam also gained the same three medals. When Thailand got one medal each for gold, silver and bronze, Vietnam got all three bronze.

Lao President Arrives in Cambodia for State Visit and SEA Games’ Opening Ceremony

H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, arrived in Phnom Penh this morning for a state visit in Cambodia, at the invitation of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia.

The Lao top leader was welcomed upon his arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport by Samdech Chaufea Veang Kong Sam Ol, Deputy Prime Minster, Minister of the Royal Palace, and H.E. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications as Minister-in-Attendance as well as many other Cambodian senior officials.

According to a press release of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during his stay in Cambodia, H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith will call on His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia.

The Lao president will also receive courtesy calls by Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum, President of the Senate of Cambodia and Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly.

H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith and Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, will hold a bilateral meeting to touch base on the further deepening of bilateral cooperation along with some regional and international issues of common concerns.

The Lao president will lay wreathes at the Independence Monument and the Royal Memorial Statute of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk “Preah Borom Ratanak Kaudh,” the late King-Father of Cambodia.

On May 5, H.E. Thongloun Sisoulith will attend the Opening Ceremony of the 32nd SEA Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games at the Morodok Techo National Stadium, the historic landmark Cambodia hosts from May 5 to 17, and June 3-9.

The state visit of H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith will further consolidate the existing excellent relations, good neighbourliness, fraternal ties, comprehensive and long-lasting strategy partnership for the mutual benefits of the two peoples.

PM Hun Sen Suggests Cambodia-Laos Agreement on Double Taxation to Boost Investment

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has asked Laos to consider having an agreement on double taxation with Cambodia to boost the investment activities between the two neighbouring nations.

The Cambodian Premier made the request during a bilateral summit meeting with visiting H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, at the Peace Palace here this morning, according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Personal Assistant to Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

The Cambodian Prime Minister also thanked H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith for accepting the invitation to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 32nd SEA Games hosted by Cambodia, and agreed with the Lao President’s insight over the bilateral relations between both countries.

For his part, H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith spoke highly of the Cambodia-Laos relationship, stressing that what needs to be done next is to work together to take this relationship to the next level by implementing the existing agreements and seeking further cooperation in the areas of tourism, investment, security and joint disaster preparedness.

Regarding the SEA Games 2023, the Lao top leader said he is honoured to attend the Opening Ceremony, and expressed his conviction that Cambodia’s hosting of the regional games will be a success and the Kingdom will earn a lot of gold medals.

A Lao high-level delegation led by H.E. President Thongloun Sisoulith arrived in Phnom Penh this morning for a state visit, at the invitation of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia.

Following his arrival, H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith was granted a royal audience by His Majesty the King.

Cambodia Celebrates Annual Visak Bochea Day

Thousands of Buddhist followers from all walks of life gathered this morning at Phnom Preah Reachtroap (Oudong) in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province, where a stupa of Buddha’s relics is located, to mark the Visak Bochea Day.

This annual celebration was presided over by Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, with the participation of His Holiness Samdech Preah Abhisiri Sugandha Mahasangharajah Dhipati Bour Kry, Great Supreme Patriarch of Dhammayuttikaya of Cambodia.

Representatives of some foreign embassies in Cambodia were also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Buddhist monks invited to the event were offered foods, drink, and cash in order to pray for the soul of the deaths to rest in peace.

Visak Bochea Day, which is a birth, enlightenment, and nirvana day of Master Buddha, for the Buddhist countries, including Cambodia, was internationally recognised by the United Nations in 2000. It is a public holiday and an occasion where the Buddhist followers are reminded of Buddha and his teachings.
