Over 16,300 IVF babies born at Tu Du Hospital in 25 years

On April 30, 25 years ago, the first three Vietnamese IVF babies were born at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tu Du Hospital, laying the first brick for the IVF sector in Vietnam.

IVF, or In vitro fertilisation, is one of several techniques available to help people with fertility problems have a baby. During IVF, an egg is removed from the woman's ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg, called an embryo, is then returned to the woman's womb to grow and develop.

This has brought many successes in terms of science and professional development, Prof., Doctor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, former Director of Tu Du Hospital, recounted at a ceremony held at the hospital on April 27 to mark the anniversary.

Therefore, April 30, 1998, is considered an important historical milestone of the IVF industry in Vietnam, bringing hope to millions of infertile couples in the country at that time.

IVF doctors have paid attention to transferring the technique to localities. In addition, the technique has been recognised and highly valued by the international community, reflected through foreign hospitals’ sending of their experts to Vietnam to learn about it. Director of the municipal Department of Health Assoc. Prof. Tang Chi Thuong asked Tu Du Hospital to implement specialised activities and techniques, apply artificial intelligence (AI) in IVF practice, and develop a medical genetics centre, a fetal intervention centre, and a neonatal intensive care centre of world standards.

Over the past 25 years, Tu Du Hospital has welcomed more than 16,300 IVF babies. The number of infertility check-ups each year ranges from 55,000 to 60,000./.

Two sections of eastern North – South Expressway open to traffic

Two sections of the eastern North - South Expressway, Mai Son - National Highway 45 and Phan Thiet - Dau Giay, were inaugurated on April 29.

The inauguration ceremony of the Phan Thiet - Dau Giay section was held in the south-central province of Binh Thuan in the presence of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. The event for the Mai Son - National Highway 45 one took place in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa and was attended by Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha. The two events were connected via videoconference.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Mai Son - National Highway 45 section is 63.37km long in total, including 14.35km in northern Ninh Binh province and 49.02km in Thanh Hoa, and invested with over 12 trillion VND (511.4 million USD). It had construction started in September 2020 and was technically opened to traffic in December 2022.

The 99km-long Phan Thiet - Dau Giay section, traversing Binh Thuan and southern Dong Nai province, has total investment of more than 12.5 trillion VND. This project also kicked off in September 2020.

In his speech, PM Chinh stressed that developing infrastructure, especially transport one, is a strategic breakthrough identified by the Party and State.

Vietnam targets 3,000km and 5,000km of expressways by 2025 and 2030, respectively. Meanwhile, only about 1,000km was built between 2000 and 2020. Therefore, the remaining workload is extremely heavy, he pointed out. As the North - South corridor always plays a critically important role as it serves as the economic and transport artery of the country, the eastern North - South Expressway with the total length of 2,063km was planned to create momentum for localities along this corridor to make breakthroughs and tap into their potential and advantages.

The expressway, starting in the northern border province of Lang Son and ending in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, will run through 32 provinces and cities. With the inauguration of the two new sections, 800km of this road has been put into use so far, he noted.

The Government leader applauded the strong determination and efforts by the transport sector, ministries, central agencies, localities, as well as affected residents to overcome difficulties to put the two projects into operation.

He also highlighted the importance of the Mai Son - National Highway 45 and Phan Thiet - Dau Giay sections to socio-economic development in Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, nearby localities, and the country as a whole.

Also on April 29, PM Chinh inspected the construction progress of the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet section of the eastern North - South Expressway. The over-100km section in Binh Thuan province is invested with nearly 11 trillion VND and had its work started in November 2020./.

Papua Police confirms wanted separatist killed by rival

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Papua Police confirmed that Joni Botak, a wanted armed criminal group (KKB) leader active in Central Papua Province has been killed by a rival group in a quarrel.Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri also confirmed that a video depicting the killing of Joni Botak and his accomplices circulating on social media is genuine. "Joni Botak was ambushed, abused, and shot by another KKB group on Monday (April 24) in Intan Jaya region after being accused as a spy," Fakhiri told ANTARA here on Saturday. Joni Botak, a separatist fighter, is wanted by the Indonesian authority for his repeated actions of killing civilians and security officers, he noted. The police chief remarked that Joni Botak was active from Tembagapura region, where mining activities of Freeport Indonesia are taking place, to Intan Jaya District in Central Papua. Before his murder, Joni Botak reportedly attempted to enter Tembagapura. However, the attempt was foiled after security officers set up checkpoints at the trails suspected to be used by the separatists to access the region, he remarked. "Security officers have blocked access to Tembagapura, compelling Joni Botak to return to Intan Jaya, where he met his fate in the hands of the Lewis Kogoya-led separatist group," Fakhiri explained. Joni Botak rose to prominence following his involvement in a shoot-out at Jipabera in Aroanop Village, Tembagapura, on February 28, 2020, which killed First Constable Doni Priyanto. Earlier, Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Admiral Yudo Margono decided to elevate the military operation tactic, from a soft approach to battle standby in areas prone to attack in Papua. The decision was taken with the objective of responding to an escalation in KKB attacks in Papua, especially the ambush perpetrated by Papuan separatists against TNI officers searching the abducted New Zealander pilot Phillip Mehrtens on April 15 that led to the deaths of five officers. "On account of the April-15 attack, we decided to escalate (our tactic) from soft approach to battle standby," the TNI commander said, as quoted in a TNI statement on April 18. baca-jugaRelated news: Papua security op will not spin out of control: TNIRelated news: TNI imposes Operation Battle Standby against Papua separatists

Secure ASEAN Summit through humane approach: NTT Police chief

Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police Chief Inspector General Johanis Asadoma urged police officers to showcase a humane and friendly demeanor towards residents in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, while securing the 2023 ASEAN Summit."Show your humanity and friendliness while managing the traffic or securing (the ASEAN Summit) in Labuan Bajo," Asadoma stated during the 2023 Operation Komodo Turangga roll call for the ASEAN Summit at the local police headquarters here on Saturday. While elaborating on his point, Asadoma cited as an example that if residents were to become rowdy or disruptive during the course of the event, then officers were expected to keep a cool head in addressing the issue to prevent matters from escalating. Officers assigned to the security operation must also ensure having sound physical and mental health, the police chief emphasized. Meanwhile, Asadoma explained that the local police's responsibility in securing the ASEAN Summit would be only within the third security ring from the venue, as the second ring is the responsibility of the military and the first ring is secured by the Presidential Security Guard (Paspampres). "Hence, I ask officers assigned to the third ring to ensure that any issue within the ring does not reach the second security ring," he stressed. The provincial police and the district police forces have readied 1,660 personnel to secure the international summit, he remarked while adding that their mobilization to Labuan Bajo by sea will start on Sunday (April 30). During the roll call, Asadoma and other provincial police top brass also inspected security vehicles and equipment, such as tactical vehicles, mobilized to secure the ASEAN Summit. Michael Feichtenbeiner, Head Coach of Myanmar, said: “I have coached the team for just two months. We have chances to play a number of matches during our training camp in Thailand with our 20 players. It is the first SEA Games for me as well as for some of our players. We have a young squad, and we are looking forward to all the tough challenges.”

For his part, Robert James Dazo Gier, head coach of the Philippines, said: “We have arrived here longer than the other teams to adapt to the weather and pitch. We have a short preparation, but we have done well. We expect good results at this SEA Games. All the matches are tough. We have some players who used to play at SEA Games before, but it is the first time for the other players.”

Park Soon Tae, head coach of Timor Leste, said: “We are very happy to be here. We will take this SEA Games at Cambodia as an opportunity to get more experience. Tomorrow is the match against the host, and we know that the home supporters will come to fill the stadium, so we are pleased to play and will do our best as we have prepared for many months for this tournament.”
